Whether you own a home or rent in Los Angeles, you have likely come to realize that our city of over 10 Million people can get noisy.  While the source of noise can vary, from late-night parties, amplified musical instruments and high-volume television sets to barking dogs, construction, and trash trucks, the result is consistent frustration and headaches.  According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s interactive noise map of the Unites States, Los Angeles is one of the worst cities for noise pollution. Loud noises are an everyday part of urban life that most of us have grown accustom to, however, there are instances when these noises can reach excessive, unnecessary and annoying levels. As such, the City of Los Angeles enacted a noise ordinance in 1973, and today employs multiple City Noise Enforcement teams to assist you in abating a noise-related nuisance.

I.  Noise Responsibility

Enforcement of Los Angeles’s Noise Ordinance is delegated to the Police Department, Department of Building and Safety, Department of Animal Regulation, and Bureau of Street Services. The specific department providing assistance will depend on the type of noise pollution. In general, the Police Department is responsible for assistance with human-generated noises, which constitute a disturbance of the peace.

The following is a list of Los Angeles Municipal Code (LAMC) sections in the Noise Ordinance and a summary of relevant violations. Before you make a complaint, check to see which department will handle your complaint and whether the noise constitutes a violation as required by the ordinance.

II.  Noise Enforcement Team (213) 996-1250
